Glen Carbon, IL

This town of little more than 10,000 people was originally known as Goshen to reflect its bucolic landscape.

However, more than a century ago, it was renamed Glen Carbon because of its importance to the coal mining industry.  The hilly main street of Glen Carbon still resembles a classic American post card and is even bordered on one end by a historic covered wooden bridge and the other populated with parks, an ice cream shop, historic homes like the Yanda Log Cabin. The Glen Carbon Library was named the best small library in America by The Library Journal.
